Mezzanine Floors UK

Should you buy a second-hand mezzanine floor?

A second-hand mezzanine can save money if it is a bolted steel system in good condition, with drawings or a known load rating, and it fits your building's height, column positions and slab. It still needs a design check and Building Regulations approval in its new location, and often new decking, stairs, gates or fire protection.

What makes a used mezzanine worth buying?

A bolted system, rather than welded; steel with no significant corrosion or impact damage; drawings, calculations or at least a load notice; and a size and grid that suit your building. Without information on the original design, the frame has to be measured and assessed, which adds cost.

What usually needs replacing?

Deck boards are often worn, wet or damaged and are commonly replaced. Edge protection and stairs may not meet current guidance. Pallet gates may be the older lift-out type. Fire protection may need adding for the new use.

What are the hidden costs?

Dismantling, transport, re-erection, new parts, a design check, Building Regulations fees and any slab works. Add them up before comparing with a new mezzanine designed for your building.

Can you install a mezzanine we buy elsewhere?

Yes, after we have surveyed and assessed it. We will tell you honestly if a used mezzanine is a poor fit for your building or load.

More questions

Is a second-hand mezzanine always cheaper?

Not always. Once transport, new parts, design checks and approvals are added, the saving can be smaller than expected.

Does a used mezzanine need Building Regulations approval?

Yes. It is treated as new work in its new location.

Can a welded mezzanine be moved?

It is much harder. Bolted systems are designed to come apart; welded ones usually need cutting and re-fabricating.
