Mezzanine Floors UK

Steel walkways and crossovers

Steel walkways and crossovers give safe pedestrian routes over conveyors, pipework, plant and floor-level hazards, and along machines or roofs where people need regular access. We design and install them in galvanised steel with grating decks, handrails, kick plates and step-overs or stairs at each end.

How we approach steel walkways and crossovers

Crossovers are often the fix for a site where staff step over or duck under a conveyor. A properly designed crossing removes the temptation, and it can be placed where people naturally want to walk.

Walkways run along process lines, between mezzanines or around plant. We set them at the height that gives safe headroom over moving equipment and keep them clear of maintenance access.

Like platforms, walkways are prefabricated so they can go in during short shutdowns.

Questions people ask

Do conveyor crossovers need Building Regulations approval?

Not always. It depends on the structure and its use. We confirm on each job.

Galvanised or painted steel?

Galvanised is the usual choice for walkways and grating because it resists wear and corrosion with little maintenance.

Can a walkway connect two mezzanines?

Yes, as long as both structures are checked for the extra load and the escape routes still work.
