Mezzanine Floors UK

Rack-supported mezzanines and pick modules

A rack-supported mezzanine uses the storage racking or shelving itself as the structure that carries walkways, creating one, two or three picking levels in the same footprint. Large versions with conveyors running through them are known as pick modules, and they are common in e-commerce and parcel fulfilment.

How we approach rack-supported mezzanines

Instead of a separate column grid, the upright frames of the racking or shelving carry the walkway decks. That makes rack-supported systems efficient for high-density small-item picking, because almost every square metre on every level is storage or aisle.

Pick modules need careful coordination: the racking design, walkway decks, stairs, conveyors, sprinklers, lighting and fire escape all interact. We plan the levels around your order profiles and the conveyor route, then work with your racking supplier and conveyor integrator so the parts fit together.

Because these structures are taller and denser than a simple mezzanine, fire strategy and sprinkler design are central. We bring the fire engineer and insurer in early.

What the job includes

  • One to three picking levels
  • Grating or chipboard walkway decks
  • Stairs and escape routes on each level
  • Conveyor and pick-face coordination
  • Sprinkler, lighting and fire strategy input
  • Designed with your racking supplier

Best for: E-commerce fulfilment, parcel operations, spares distribution and retail distribution centres.

What happens after you get in touch

  1. Send the details

Floor size, clear height, postcode and what will go on the mezzanine, through the form, the guide-price tool, phone or WhatsApp.

  2. Free survey

We measure the building, check the slab, doors, racking, lights and sprinklers, and agree the load and layout.

  3. Design and fixed quote

Drawings, structural calculations and a written price naming the deck, stairs, gates and fire protection.

  4. Approve, install, sign off

Building Control approval, steel fabrication, installation around your operation, then the completion certificate.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between a mezzanine and a pick module?

A mezzanine has its own steel columns and beams. A rack-supported system uses the racking or shelving frames as the structure, and a pick module is a larger multi-level version with conveyors running through it.

Are rack-supported mezzanines cheaper?

Per usable storage position they often are, because the racking does double duty. They are less flexible than a free-standing mezzanine if your layout changes.

Do pick modules need sprinklers?

Many do, depending on the building, the height and the stored goods. The fire strategy and insurer's requirements decide it, so we involve them at design stage.
