Mezzanine Floors UK

Heavy-duty mezzanine floors

A heavy-duty mezzanine is designed for high floor loads, such as palletised stock placed by forklift, machinery or dense materials. It uses heavier hot-rolled steel beams and columns, a closer column grid or larger base plates, and a robust deck, all checked against what your existing floor slab can carry.

How we approach heavy-duty mezzanine floors

Heavy loads change the design in three places: the deck, the frame and the foundations. Decks move from chipboard towards steel plate or composite options, primary beams become heavier universal beams, and column loads rise, which puts more weight on each base plate.

That is why the floor slab matters most on a heavy-duty job. We review the slab thickness and condition, and where needed arrange cores or plate load tests, then size base plates or design new pad foundations so the point loads are spread safely.

Heavy-duty mezzanines are often designed around a specific use, such as a machine, a production cell or a pallet store, so the load notice on the finished floor states exactly what it can take.

What the job includes

  • Design for high uniformly distributed and point loads
  • Hot-rolled universal beams and columns
  • Steel plate, grating or heavy chipboard decks
  • Slab checks, cores or plate load tests where needed
  • Enlarged base plates or new pad foundations
  • Load notices fixed on completion

Best for: Pallet stores, engineering works, metal stockholders, plant and machinery floors.

What happens after you get in touch

  1. Send the details

Floor size, clear height, postcode and what will go on the mezzanine, through the form, the guide-price tool, phone or WhatsApp.

  2. Free survey

We measure the building, check the slab, doors, racking, lights and sprinklers, and agree the load and layout.

  3. Design and fixed quote

Drawings, structural calculations and a written price naming the deck, stairs, gates and fire protection.

  4. Approve, install, sign off

Building Control approval, steel fabrication, installation around your operation, then the completion certificate.

Questions people ask

How much weight can a mezzanine floor hold?

As much as it is designed for. Light storage floors are commonly designed around 3.5 kN/m², medium storage around 5 kN/m², and heavy-duty floors 7.5 kN/m² or more. The rating is stated on a load notice.

Will my floor slab take a heavy mezzanine?

It depends on its thickness, reinforcement and condition. We check it, arrange cores or load tests if needed, and design base plates or new foundations to suit.

Can a forklift drive on a mezzanine?

Only on a floor specifically designed for it, which is unusual and costly. Most heavy-duty mezzanines take pallets placed by forklift from below through a pallet gate, with pallet trucks used on the deck where designed for.
