Can my warehouse floor slab take a mezzanine?
Most modern warehouse slabs can take a standard storage mezzanine, but it has to be checked, because all the load arrives through a few column base plates. We look at the slab's thickness, reinforcement and condition, take cores or carry out load tests where needed, and design base plates or new pad foundations to suit.

Why is the slab the critical part?
A mezzanine spreads its load across the deck, but the frame gathers it into the columns. A column on a 4m by 4m grid carrying a storage load can easily put several tonnes on a single base plate. The slab must resist that without cracking or punching through.
What do you check?
We look for the building's original slab design, measure the slab where we can, and inspect for cracking, settlement and joints near the column positions. If there is doubt we take diamond cores to measure thickness and reinforcement, or arrange a plate load test.
What if the slab is not strong enough?
There are several fixes: larger base plates to spread the load, a tighter column grid so each column carries less, moving columns away from joints and edges, or cutting out the slab and casting new pad foundations under the columns. The design and cost depend on the findings.
Does a mezzanine damage the floor?
Not when it is designed correctly. Columns are fixed with mechanical or chemical anchors. When a mezzanine is removed the fixings are cut back and the holes made good.

More questions
How thick should a slab be for a mezzanine?
There is no single answer, because reinforcement and ground conditions matter as much as thickness. Many modern warehouse slabs are 150mm or more, but we check every case.
Do I need a structural engineer?
The mezzanine designer checks the slab as part of the design. For older or unknown slabs we may arrange further testing.
Can a mezzanine be fixed to a mezzanine slab or upper floor?
Only after a specific structural assessment of that floor. Ground-bearing slabs are the usual case.
