Mezzanine Floors UK

Pallet gates, handrails and balustrades

Pallet gates and handrails protect people at the open edges of a mezzanine. Up-and-over pallet gates let a forklift place a pallet on the deck while a barrier always stays closed between staff and the edge, and 1100mm handrails with mid-rails and kick plates guard the rest of the perimeter.

How we approach pallet gates and handrails

The loading point is the most dangerous place on a mezzanine. A simple lift-out bar or swing gate leaves the edge open while goods are loaded. An up-and-over or rotating pallet gate has two barriers linked together, so when the outer side opens to the forklift the inner side closes to the people on the deck.

Along the edges we fit guarding at 1100mm with a mid-rail or mesh infill and a kick plate, which is the guarding height Approved Document K gives for edges of floors in factories and warehouses. Mesh infill stops cartons being pushed off; glass suits offices and retail.

We size pallet gates to your pallet and load, including extra-deep and wide gates for long loads, and can retrofit them to existing mezzanines.

What the job includes

  • Up-and-over and rotating pallet gates
  • Wide and deep gates for long or oversized loads
  • 1100mm handrails with mid-rails or mesh infill
  • Kick plates along every open edge
  • Glass and solid balustrades for offices and retail
  • Retrofits and upgrades to existing floors

Best for: Any mezzanine with a loading edge, plus upgrades where gates or guarding fall short.

Questions people ask

Why use an up-and-over pallet gate?

Because a barrier stays closed between the people on the deck and the open edge at all times, even while a forklift is loading. Lift-out bars and swing gates leave the edge open.

What height should mezzanine handrails be?

Approved Document K gives 1100mm for guarding at the edges of floors in factories and warehouses, with a mid-rail or infill and a kick plate. Stair flights have their own figures.

Can you add a pallet gate to an existing mezzanine?

Yes. We check the edge beam and deck at the loading point, then fit a gate sized to your pallets.
